Chicago's no-kill shelter for cats, rabbits and dogs

Feral Cats and TNR

You see them all the time: living outside in parks or in alleys. You’ve probably even see a few of them around where you live. They are cats who live outside. Some have been abandoned to fend for themselves; some of them were probably born outside. The longer they live on their own, in colonies and away from human contact, the more feral they become.

The solution for these cats? Red Door believes in TNR: trap-neuter-return. Trap-Neuter-Return is a management plan in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors in cities, towns, and rural areas are humanely trapped, then evaluated, vaccinated, and sterilized by veterinarians. Kittens and tame cats are adopted into good homes. Healthy adult cats too wild to be adopted are returned to their familiar habitat under the lifelong care of volunteers.

Red Door works with the Chicagoland Stray Cat Coalition and follows the guidelines of Alley Cat Allies. Please check out these websites to learn more about how you can help feral cats.

Red Door rents out humane traps. Please call the shelter first (773-764-2242) to be sure traps are available.
